Unlike GTA IV, you can carry on in the middle of a mission if you failed it rather then having to go back to the beginning, while using the replay function. In addition, there are tonnes of other activities to do, such as golf, parachuting, racing, cage-fighting, running a triathlon, and even competing in gang wars and drug wars! These two also allow you to run in to NPCs on the street, which always turns out to be interesting. There is also a lot to do in terms of non-story things. For one, there are a lot more new vehicles, including sports bikes, sports cars, better helicopters, and so on. The sound effects for other general purposes are also very nicely done, and tend to do a good job regardless of what you're doing.ĭespite the fact that these are considerably shorter than GTA IV, they do offer a lot of new things. The voice-acting is done incredibly well, and they even hired some well-known people, such as Omid Djallili, for the parts. All the radio stations have been custom-designed for different audiences, and it seems clear that a lot of hard work has been put in to make sure it functions well. The audio, as usual for the GTA series, is fantastic. There's been a few alterations since some characters were seen in GTA IV, but that's not really noticeable and, in the end, helps improve the game rather then be a hindrance. The buildings are designed well, the attention to detail on characters is nicely done, and the look as a whole is quite pleasing. The general look of the game is roughly on par with GTA IV. It's a completely different side of Liberty City but it's pulled off in similarly impressive fashion.īoth characters also cross paths with each other, as well as Niko from GTA IV, which is quite a nice touch from Rockstar. The story here is far more glitzy and glamorous, and there is a lot more humour, money, parties and so on. The Ballad of Gay Tony, on the other hand, has you playing as 25-year old Luis Lopez, the bodyguard and business associate of Tony Prince, a club owner. While it is bitter-sweet, however, it's still an enjoyable experience, and you definitely get sucked in to it whilst playing.

TLADs story is darker in comparison to GTA IV and takes on more of a realist approach. The Lost and Damned has you playing as Johnny Klebitz, a 34-year old biker and second-in-command of The Lost biker gang.

Upon first glance it may just look like some small expansion pack that only GTA die-hards would enjoy, but Episodes from Liberty City has a lot more to offer than a simple blast from the past. The only negatives are my usual gripes with GTA in terms of flying missions which seem to have been designed with the sole purpose of frustrating the player and some of the auto aiming is so bad it will make you want to hurl your controller at the nearest wall (quick hint avoid targeting and shooting when you are on stairs!). The Ballad of Gay Tony is a lot lighter and aims for a more fun approach to its general madness with its crazy characters and missions, dare I say it seems more like a Saints Row game than GTA.īoth titles even though quite short in GTA terms and the maps don’t have much in the way of side missions or activities to do, are however very entertaining and offer value for money for a budget title. In terms of actual gameplay both titles offer more of the same of what you are used to if you have ever played a GTA title, lots of violence and anti-social behaviour! As with the other episode the story was cleverly intertwined with the main GTA IV story and resulted in the odd cameo by Niko and other characters. I played The Lost and Damned episode first and this was a fairly interesting affair as it continued the dark and gritty feel of the main game while adding to it with the main characters freshness and being more focussed on the motorbike aspect of the game. However, what you do get with Rockstar is great storytelling, engaging gameplay and a level of quality that is lacking from a lot of developers these days. Unfortunately time has not been kind to either episode included in this pack and after playing the amazing GTA V it was quite difficult to not compare the two which is quite unfair. I am a big GTA and Rockstar fan but this was one of the few titles that I actually had sitting in my collection which I never got around to playing until recently.
